Through the prompting of his elder brother Arsène, himself a distinguished philologist specializing in medieval French, James (who was endowed with a superb intellect in a frail body), after a brilliant school career, enrolled at the École des Hautes Études, where he studied comparative gram-mar with Michel Bréal and Sanskrit with Abel Bergaigne and made his first contribution to Iranian studies in 1874 with “Notes de philologie iranienne” (MSL 4, pp. 300-17)... more

GĀHĀNBĀR, Middle Persian name for the feasts held at the end of each of the six seasons of the Zoroastrian year. In the Avesta, seasons and feasts are both called yāirya ratavō (yearly times; Air Wb., cols. 1497-98, s.v. ratu-), and the term rad was still used in this sense in early Middle Persian, as was gāh (q.v.) in its meaning of “(appointed) time” (MacKenzie, 1970, pp. 264-66)...

AMURDĀD (Pahl. form of Av. Amərətāt, NPers. Mordād, Amordād), one of the seven great Aməša Spəntas of Zoroastrianism, the hypostasis of the concept of “not dying,” that is Long Life on this earth or Immortality in the hereafter (cf. Ved. amṛtatva). Amurdād/Amərətāt is regularly linked with Hordād/Haurvatāt, Wholeness or Health, and is the guardian of plants, as Hordād (NPers. Ḵordād) is of water, two creations which are themselves naturally associated. These are the most readily comprehensible of the links between the Aməša Spəntas and physical phenomena, since there exists “an entirely clear causal connection in the everyday world between water and plants and the divinities of life and health” (H. Lommel, “Symbolik der Elemente in der zoroastrischen Religion,” Zarathustra, ed. W. Schlerath, Darmstadt, 1970, p. 260)...
